Perth Mint 2015 Lunar Goat Coins
Images of the Perth Mint 2015 Lunar Year of the Goat Coins have finally been revealed (click to enlarge):

Here is a written preview and thoughts on the designs I provided at BullionBaron.com in an article published yesterday 'Lunar Maa-aadness with 2015 Year of the Goat Coins':
Perth Mint 2015 Silver Lunar Goat Design: The design follows the styling cues of the 2014 Lunar Horse Coin with the leaves and branches of a tree bordering the top left hand side of the coin. There are some grass patches. There are 3 goats pictured all with long hair, two have their heads up and one has it's head down presumably eating some grass. Overall I think it's a solid design, I prefer it over the Perth Mint's 2003 Silver Goat Coin. Animal hair can be one of the most difficult elements to capture in a coin and it will be difficult to tell how well Perth Mint have done with this coin until seen in the flesh, but certainly the computer generated images give the indication they've done well to portray the long hair.

Perth Mint 2015 Gold Lunar Goat Design: This design illustrates a shorter haired mountain goat atop a rocky landscape with mountains in the background. The rocky foreground is quite detailed with the mountainous background pictured in a much simpler form. I think the backdrop on this coin lets down the design somewhat, I would have preferred to see detailed mountains as we saw on the Perth Mint's Gold Lunar Horse Coins last year. Overall I still think it's a good design and prefer it over the Perth Mint 2003 Gold Goat Coin.
The release dates are below as previously detailed on this site.

Royal Australian Mint 2015 Lunar Series Year of the Goat Gold and Silver Coins

The Royal Australian Mint has put their 2015 Lunar Goat Series Coins on the site for pre-order, the official release date is a couple of weeks from now on September 1st.

The Gold and Silver proof coins share the same design and come with the following description on the website:
2015 Proof Coin Lunar Series Year of the Goat

The Chinese Zodiac, Sheng Xiao, is a twelve-year cycle, with each year represented by an animal with a unique personality. If you were born under this sign, you are likely to possess elegance, charm and kindness. Packaged in a stunning presentation case, this coin features a design of three goats surrounding plum blossoms, which symbolise hope, prosperity, purity and renewal in spring.
And the images:

It's a pretty nice design actually. The Silver coins come in various sizes, 11.66 grams (mintage 10,000), 1 ounce (mintage 5,000), 5 ounces (mintage 500) and 1 kilogram (mintage 500). Last year they changed up the design between the different sizes, but appear to have standardised them this year, using the same design across all sizes. A mintage of 500 coins for the 5oz coin is quite low (it was 5,000 last year) and the price point of A$320 for the coin is much better than the Perth Mint's circa $480-500 price tag for their coins this size. May be worth giving this RAM coin some consideration.

There is also the 1/10oz Gold coin available which has a mintage of 1,500. It doesn't appear they are doing a 1oz Gold coin (at least one hasn't been listed on the website yet).

Along with the standard proof coins above they also do the Tetra-decagon Goat Coin which comes in both Silver (1/2oz) and CuNi. Both have unlimited mintage. I really liked the Tetra-decagon Horse & Snake Lunar Coins so it was a little disappointing to see the goat design which I am not as fond of:

If you are interested in pre-ordering the Royal Australian Mint Lunar Goat Coins you can do so at the Mint e-shop.

Royal Mint 2015 Year of the Sheep Lunar Coin Range

$

The Royal Mint (UK), like the Royal Canadian Mint, has gone with a 'Year of the Sheep' naming convention for their lunar coins this year. Chard's says the following on the choice:
As Wales is mainly a rural country a big factor to their economy is sheep farming and with over 8.5 million sheep in wales, making up 26% of sheep within the UK, it is not surprising The Royal Mint chose the sheep over the goat.
Last year was their first coin in a new lunar series starting with the Year of the Horse.

They used the same design on both the Gold and Silver coins, keeping consistent with the first coin. It's a pretty good design, I like it. It has a decorative look to the sheep's coat, but then simple lines for the face and horns, it works quite well.

Royal Mint 2015 Year of the Sheep Gold and Silver Coins

The 1/10oz Gold coin has a mintage of 2,888, the 1oz Gold coin mintage is 888 and only 38 for the 5oz Gold coin.

The Silver coins come in 1oz, 5oz and 1oz Gilded varieties with mintage of 9,888, 1,088 and 4,888 respectively.

Chard has them available for sale on their website (Gold& Silver), presumably they will soon make their way to the website of the Royal Mint also.

New Zealand Mint Releases 2015 Lunar Year of the Goat Coins

New Zealand Mint has just released their line-up of Year of the Goat coins. You can view them all on this page, but images of the coins are below...

The New Zealand Mint provided the following description for their lunar range:

New Zealand Mint is releasing four beautiful Lunar coins to celebrate the Year of the Goat 2015.

The Goat is the eighth animal in the twelve year Zodiac cycle. Symbolising such character traits as creativity, intelligence, dependability, and calmness, those born during the Year of the Goat love to dream and ponder. Those born during this Lunar Year are often quiet of personality and very fond of nature.

The 3 coins with the same design are described:

This coin face features a relief engraved Goat perched on a steep rocky mountainside in rural New Zealand. Silhouetted against a dramatic sky, the grandeur of the altitude and panoramic view may be felt in the dynamic moment captured on this coin.

And the gilded design which carries a different image:

This coin face features a relief engraved Goat of a contemporary style, set against a detailed background illustrating the global community of cultures in which we live. To the left of the design, the gold gilded Chinese character for Goat is set against a proof quality background.

I'm a fan of the New Zealand Mint coins, especially some of their packaging, I just wish they would keep a consistent approach to their lunar coins. For the last 3 years (Dragon, Snake, Horse) they've gilded the animal in gold, but appears this time opted to highlight the Chinese character.

Some of the proof Perth Mint lunar coins have struggled in recent years, sometimes selling below release price, the Three-Coin Set & 1oz Silver Proof is usually fast to sell out though and for the collector the secondary market price doesn't always matter so much as you are securing the next issue for your collection.

If you missed this article last year I'd highly recommend a read (in which I detail some of the reasons to stick with the Silver 1oz & Three-Coin Set Proofs if speculating on the coins which are more likely to hold their value or rise):

'Perth Mint 2014 Silver Lunar Horse Proof Coins - Baron's Picks: Three-Coin Set & 1oz Proof'

Along with sale in the Three-Coin Set, the 2oz Year of the Goat Proof Silver Coin will be sold separately, last year it appeared around November.

For those buying any of the proof lunar coins from Perth Mint, you will want to be refreshing this page at the time of their release for the best opportunity to purchase the coins:

PAMP Lunar Calendar Series: 2015 Year of the Goat

$
0
0

PAMP has released their 2015 Year of the Goat minted ingots and in my opinion it's the best design (of the PAMP lunar releases) to date.

This Gold and Silver PAMP lunar series of minted bars started in 2012 with Year of the Dragon, continuing with the Snake, Horse and now Goat. The following is the blurb from the PAMP website:
PAMP is pleased to announce the latest edition in its popular Lunar Calendar Series: the 2015 Year of the Goat ingot.

Celebrated by the Chinese as a symbol of harmony and serenity, the year of the goat signifies a time of peace, artistry and great creativity. The docile nature of the goat has long conveyed a nurturing spirit of caring and solemnity throughout Chinese culture, and remains one of the most well-known creatures to benefit civilizations the world over.

The ingot's unique and striking design effect depicts the goat on the obverse standing amid the tall grass in a quiet field while the reverse reveals the young kid nestled safely behind the elder goat. The innovative and eye-catching front-to-back design is a well-known hallmark of the series.

As with all editions of the Lunar Calendar Series, the 2015 Year of the Goat ingot is sealed within brilliant red CertiPAMP packaging, ready-made for gift-giving while also appealing to the experienced bullion enthusiast.
The Silver bars will come in sizes of 10 grams, 1 ounce and 100 grams. The Gold bars will come in 5 grams, 1 ounce and 100 gram sizes.

They are minted in unlimited quantity, but each bar comes in CertiPAMP packaging which lists the certificate number (the case also provides protection from scratches and peace of mind the bar hasn't been tampered with).

They aren't listed currently, but site sponsor Bullion Money is likely to stock them in the near future (see here for the existing PAMP lunar range).

Gods of Olympus – Hades 2014 2oz Silver High Relief Coin From Perth Mint & Other New Releases

$

Gods of Olympus – Hades 2014 2oz Silver High Relief Coin
There are several lunar coins & sets being released by Perth Mint on October 7th (in around 12 hours), but perhaps the most interesting coin in the line-up this month is the 'Gods of Olympus– Hades 2014 2oz Silver High Relief Coin' which is pictured above.

Given the slow sales and lukewarm reception to the initial proof lunar coins released by Perth Mint last month (surprisingly the Silver Proof Three-Coin Set is still available at the time of this post), I don't think there will be a large rush for the typeset or coloured coins (though they have been popular types to collect in the past).

The big demand is likely to be for the 'Gods of Olympus– Hades 2014 2oz Silver High Relief Coin', which is the 3rd and final coin in this popular Perth Mint set. Initial reactions to the new coin design (which was leaked early) have been somewhat negative, but we saw similar with the first coin in the series and it has proven very popular. Personally I like the styling of all 3 coins in the set.

The first coin in the series (Zeus) now sells for $700 and more (on ebay) following a release price under $200. The second coin sold out just as quickly and is also selling for a hefty premium (circa $400+).

Perth Mint has reportedly contacted previous buyers of other coins in the Gods of Olympus Series before the release of Hades in order to ensure collectors who are buying the set have an opportunity to buy this one (& Downies have done similar with their allocation, now have a waiting list for any canceled orders), this along with the low mintage means that there will likely be heavy demand for the coin when it's released in a few hours. The coin will be sold out within minutes so ensure you are ready to buy the minute it is released if you intend on doing do.

Another recent release that may be worth your consideration is the 'Australian Abalone Shell 2014 1oz Silver Proof Coin' which was released in September. Initially comments on coin forums were apprehensive about the design (when only the stock, computer generated designs were available), but collectors have quickly warmed to the design once they've seen the coins in the flesh. The Perth Mint tweeted a photo of the coin to me:

Australian Abalone Shell 2014 1oz Silver Proof Coin
A great looking coin if I ever saw one!

If you're looking to secure any of the Perth Mint new releases, you'll want to keep the 'Recent Releases' page refreshing at 8:00am (AWST) 7 October 2014. Good luck!

2015 GHANA "Lunar Skulls" YEAR OF THE GOAT 1oz Silver High Relief Coin

2015 GHANA "Lunar Skulls" YEAR OF THE GOAT 1oz Silver High Relief Coin

Just a quick post to cover a unique new release lunar coin that is available to pre-order. In my opinion the original take on a lunar design is sure to be a hit.

The '2015 GHANA "Lunar Skulls" YEAR OF THE GOAT 1oz Silver High Relief Coin' is the first in a series. There is a limited mintage of only 500 PROOF coins and a still very tight mintage of 2000 for the BU version.

Details from the series owner:

"Son-Montuno is pleased to announce the first coin in our new series, "Lunar Skulls". Working closely with SkullCoins.com, US based tattoo artist Kiana Roo from KangarooPawTattoo.com and under the strict authority of the Republic of Ghana, SMmint (SMmint.com) brings you a new twist on the classic annual lunar theme.

Coins are expected to ship approximately in the end of December to middle of January immediately after received & hot off the press!"

Each of the coins is engraved with the serial number that is also printed on the Certificate of Authenticity that accompanies the coin. This attribute is usually reserved only for higher priced coins, such as the 'Niue 2015 $8 Lunar Goat Gold Plated 5oz Silver Proof' where the number was on the edge of the coin.

Information I've read suggests this coin was minted privately in the United States, but the face value and approval for coin status by Ghana gives this design an edge over silver rounds.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a quick sell out, they are already disappearing quickly on ebay. You can buy the proof coin HERE (US$89). You can buy the BU coin HERE (US$69). Or the BU version is also available with free international shipping via First Coin Company (apparently the coupon THANKYOU will get you an additional $2.10 off per coin).

From a thread on Silver Stackers where a member contacted the series owner:

"I have control of half the mintage, my partner has control of the other half which is mostly being sold wholesale in the European and Asian markets.  Out of my half, I have allocated 50 pieces for retail on ebay which looks like they are soon to be gone.  I might be able to allocate a few more, we will see.  I need to check my wholesale requests first.  Out of my 250 pieces of the proof coins, I only allowed my dealers to have a maximum of 10 coins each."

Disclosure: I've bought 5 of the proof variety.

2016 Year of the Monkey Coins (Lunar Series) from Perth Mint (Gold/Silver)

Perth Mint Year of the Monkey Gold Coin from 2004
You read it here first folks. Technically the Year of the Goat hasn't even started (February 19, 2015), but I have a scoop on the designs for next years 2016 Year of the Monkey Lunar Coin design from Perth Mint.

The Year of the Monkey doesn't start until February 8th, 2016, though Perth Mint will likely be releasing their coins in early September the year prior (i.e. this year) as we've become accustomed.

Here is a preview of what we can expect from the Year of the Monkey design (my emphasis to highlight design specifics):

2016 Year of the Monkey - Gold Bullion Coins

The design on the 2016 Year of the Monkey (1kg, 10oz, 2oz, 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz, 1/20oz) gold bullion coins, consists of a pattern of lines forming a circle immediately inside the rim, surrounding a representation of a monkey sitting on the branch of a tree, with the tree trunk to one side and leaves and a peach hanging above. The coin includes the following inscriptions ‘Year of the Monkey’, the Pinyin pictograph pronounced ‘hóu’ and meaning monkey and the initials of the designer Ing Ing Jong ‘IJ’.

2016 Year of the Monkey - Silver Bullion Coins

The design on the 2016 Year of the Monkey (10kg, 1kg, 10oz, 5oz, 2oz, 1oz, 1/2oz) silver bullion coins, consists of a pattern of lines forming a circle immediately inside the rim, surrounding a representation of an adult monkey and a young monkey holding a peach, sitting on a branch with leafy foliage and a peach to the side. The coin includes the following inscriptions ‘Year of the Monkey’, the Pinyin pictograph pronounce ‘hóu’ and meaning monkey and the initials of the designer Ing Ing Jong ‘IJ’.

-------

The coin's designer Ing Ing Jong also design the Year of the Snake coins for Perth Mint as detailed in a blog post:
The designs of the latest Australian Lunar coins from The Perth Mint are the work of talented illustrator Ing Ing Jong.
Ing graduated from Perth’s Central TAFE School of Art and Design in 2006 with an Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design, having specialized in illustration and multimedia. She promptly enrolled for a Bachelor of Multimedia at Curtin University in order to undertake advanced studies in animation, web design, illustration and video editing.
She was also recently interviewed by The Coin Analyst (Louis Golino) on Coin week (read in full here):
Ing Ing Jong, a Perth Mint coin designer, recently discussed with me her experience as a coin designer and her work on the new American Bald Eagle high relief silver proof coin, a stunning piece that depicts the bird’s profile in exquisite detail.  The coin has a limited mintage of 5,000 units, most of which sold out quickly at various U.S. coin distributors over the past few weeks.  The coin was minted by Perth on behalf of the government of Tuvalu.
We can look forward to seeing a picture of the designs from Perth Mint in early September on release or just before. Stay tuned to this site for more information as it comes to hand.

For those interested in stocking up on bullion 2015 Year of the Goat coins, site sponsor Bullion Money has a selection available here, including the highly sought after 1oz Silver coin (which often achieves a premium in time).

Perth Mint is still offering various premium Year of the Goat coins which you can view here.

Is it that time of the year already?

This new release coin follows the PAMP struck, Downies commissioned series of coins that started two years ago. See these posts for the previous releases:

They are impressive looking coins and this years release is no exception.

Introducing the 'Niue 2016 $8 Lunar Monkey Gold Plated 5oz Silver Proof Coin' (click any below images of the coin for a larger size).

Available to purchase from Downies this coin comes with the following description:

With the Lunar 5oz Series one of the world’s hottest programs, the 2016 $8 Lunar Monkey Gold-Plated 5oz Silver Proof is guaranteed to sell out at speed.
  • Mintage restricted to a mere 500 coins – sell-out certain!
  • Struck to Proof quality from FIVE OUNCES of 99.9% silver
  • Measures 65mm – and features precise selective gold-plating!
  • Set in a timber case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity
  • Features individual edge-numbering
Interesting that Downies has gone with the monkey and peach theme, which is the way Perth Mint appears to be going given their description of upcoming lunar coin releases as linked below. Peaches (in Chinese mythology) are a symbol of immortality or a long life.

As usual I will be following the coming years lunar coin releases closely, so be sure to subscribe or favourite this site ready for the truckload of coins that are about to be released into the end of the year!

Treasures of Oz 'Tokelau'& Other 2016 Lunar Monkey Gold & Silver Coins (Year of the Monkey)

The Tokelau Lunar Series by Treasures of Oz started several years ago with the lunar snake.

You can read about the previous years releases here:

Treasures of Oz has the new years coins (2016 Lunar Monkey) listed for pre-order on their website and looks to have expanded the range from previous years offerings. See some of those available pictured below or visit their site for more information and to place a pre-order.

Their description for the coins covers the various releases:

YEAR OF THE MONKEY

An ancient Chinese proverb says “Even a tiger cannot beat a crowd of monkeys.” Those born in the Year of the Monkey are loyal and devoted to their families and friends.

As social individuals with effusive charm and incredible luck, they love to be the center of attention and are always friendly to people they meet. They thrive with a tight-knit family and a close circle of friends. With their sharp wits and minds, and the ability to be excellent listeners, they easily attract a large following.

Once they make a lifelong commitment, they are faithful companions, and make excellent teachers and parents.

MONKEY FAMILY - Continuing the popular series

Tokelau’s Monkey Family coins beautifully capture these qualities of parenting and teaching with the mother and her young son. The design has been beautifully rendered by designer Alexander Vorodeyev, creator of the Lunar Family series issued by Treasures of Oz since 2012. The Monkey Family coins will be available in a variety of finishes with releases commencing mid July 2015.

PLAYFUL IN BAMBOO 1/2oz SILVER COLOUR PROOF COIN

Introducing a 1/2oz silver coin to the Lunar program for the first time, Tokelau has issued a delightful design featuring a troop of playful monkeys, excitedly exploring a bamboo grove, the design invokes the sense of freedom and the enjoyment of life so common to those born in the Year of the Monkey.
Mischievous and lighthearted, individuals born during this year are often the masters of practical jokes – but they are always well-intentioned. They perpetually crave fun activities and mental stimulation, and they truly know how to have a good time! Just as the monkeys on this coin enjoy a playful climb through the forest of bamboo, so does the Year of the Monkey bring a cheerful new outlook on life.

MIRROR MONKEYS– MASSIVE 65mm 1oz SILVER PROOF COIN

The intelligence and inquisitive nature of monkeys is highlighted on this large format 1oz silver coin.  At an astounding 65mm in diameter, yet containing just 1oz pure silver, this coin is an excellent example of the Minter’s art.  The coin is created in proof condition, with an intriguing mirror image finish – one side with the monkey in sculpted proof with a highly polished proof table, the other side with a frosted table and polished monkey.  Minted by the Mint of Norway, with a tiny mintage, this Tokelau coin is definitely one to add to any lunar coin collection.

Scoop: 2017 Year of the Rooster Coins (Lunar Series) from Perth Mint (Gold/Silver)

$

2005 Year of the Rooster Gold Coin From Perth Mint
Yes you read that title correctly, another very early lunar coin scoop for readers. The Year of the Goat only started in February this year, the Year of the Monkey doesn't start until February 8, 2016, but I have a scoop on the designs (description) for the 2017 Year of the Rooster Lunar Coin design from Perth Mint.

The Year of the Rooster doesn't start until January 28, 2017, though Perth Mint will likely be releasing their coins in early September 2016 the year prior (still around 13 months from now) as we've become accustomed.

Here is a preview of what we can expect from the Year of the Rooster design (my emphasis to highlight design specifics):

2017 Year of the Rooster - Gold Investor Coins

The design on the 2017 Year of the Rooster (1kg, 10oz, 2oz, 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz, 1/20oz) gold bullion coins, consists of a pattern of lines forming a circle immediately inside the rim, surrounding a representation of a rooster and several clumps of grass. The coin includes the following inscriptions ‘Year of the Rooster’, the Pinyin pictograph pronounced ‘jī’ and meaning rooster and the initials of the designer Aleysha Howarth‘AH’.

2017 Year of the Rooster - Silver Investor Coins

The design on the 2017 Year of the Rooster (10kg, 1kg, 10oz, 5oz, 2oz, 1oz, 1/2oz) silver bullion coins, consists of a pattern of lines forming a circle immediately inside the rim, surrounding a representation of a rooster, hen and chicks, and several clumps of grass. The coin includes the following inscriptions ‘Year of the Rooster’, the Pinyin pictograph pronounced ‘jī’ and meaning rooster and the initials of the designer Tom Vaughan‘TV’.

For the 2017 Year of the Rooster designs from Perth Mint the designers will differ between the Gold and Silver coin releases. This will be a break from at least the last 3 releases (Monkey, Goat and Horse) where the designer was the same for both coins.

To provide a little background on the designers of the 2017 Year of the Rooster coins you can read an interview and profile of Perth Mint Designer Aleysha Howarth here. Amongst other coins she designed the eight coins which form the Australian Opal series. You can read more about Tom Vaughan in an interview from a few years back here. He was also the designer for both Perth Mint Year of the Horse bullion coins as detailed in their descriptions covered in an earlier post.

I will be covering all the 2017 Year of the Rooster releases on this site in around 12 months time, in the meantime, we have only just started seeing the Year of the Monkey coins released which I will continue to cover here.

Perth Mint have released images and information about the upcoming 2016 Year of the Monkey Gold & Silver Bullion Coins. Here they are (click to enlarge):

I am quite pleased with the design. I didn't buy any of the bullion release lunar goats from Perth Mint, but I will be stocking up on more than a few of these. Release date for the bullion coins is not until October as per this schedule:

However some of the proof coins will be released at the Perth Mint from September 1st. As per the 'Forthcoming Releases' schedule:

As usual some of these coins are likely to sell out fast at the Perth Mint, so if looking to complete collections check in at the time they've suggested (can change without notice):

As I have said in the past, try and avoid any dealer price gouging, particularly on the silver 1oz bullion release which is mintage limited to 300,000 coins.

A number of investors have been burned by getting caught up in the hype and overpaying. I wrote in 2013:
Although I think the 1oz bullion coin from Perth Mint is the best lunar coin to purchase (for future increase in value), I only think it's only worth buying if you pay a reasonable premium today. As it stands the standard A$10 premium on Perth Mint 1 ounce bullion coins (from the mint, there are volume breaks) is higher than many other mints and 37% premium to spot price (A$26.75). However, a lower premium circa $5-7 is usually possible given dealer discounts.

Most Perth Mint distributors have decided to increase the premium they charge customers on the 1oz mintage limited horse simply because the demand is there. In Australia thats resulted in a $11 (41%) premium ($1 over maximum Perth Mint premium direct, $4-6 over the usual premium they might charge on 1 ounce coins), with Gold Stackers being an exception.
If dealers are offering this coin in the $5-10 range over spot, I think it will offer investors a great opportunity to leverage off the popularity of the 1oz Lunar coins from the Mint, balanced with exposure to any future increase in the price of Silver.

2016 Macau Lunar Monkey Gold & Silver Proof Coins

Thanks to reader Coins 07 for highlighting the latest Macau lunar coins have been made available for order on the Singapore Mint website (images, specifications and pricing, release is the end of October). I previously covered the Macau Goat, Horse and Snake.

The 2016 Macau Monkey's are pictured below and come in Gold (7.78g) and Silver (1oz and 5oz).

The 1oz and 5oz Proof Silver Coins are sold by ballot due to their limited mintage and high level of demand. Interesting how commonplace the inclusion of peaches has been in lunar coin designs this year.

------------

For those interested in the Perth Mint proof releases, don't forget that the first wave of designs will be hitting the Perth Mint website early this coming week as detailed in another recent post:

More on Perth Mint 2016 Lunar Monkey Coin Releases - Proof & Bullion

Tomorrow morning will see the release of some additional proof Perth Mint lunar coin releases...

These sets aren't likely to sell out immediately given muted demand for the plain silver proof coins, most of which are still available (the three-coin set appears to be unavailable on the Perth Mint website).

Today also saw the official release of the Australian Lunar Monkey bullion coins:

So dealers have started listing the coins on their websites, including the highly sought after and mintage limited 1oz bullion coins (300,000 Silver, 30,000 Gold).

I will be trying to keep track of the 1oz silver coin prices in this thread on Silver Stackers (but if come across any bargains I will likely cross post in a new article here):

So far it seems dealers will be chasing $13+ premiums. As I have said in the past (and continue repeating), if these are an investment don't pay too much. I will be keeping an eye out for any reasonable premiums ($6-8 over spot price per coin), but if not achieved then am not likely to buy a substantial number this year. You can't blame businesses for looking to take some extra profit on these coins given the high demand and often low margin businesses they run, but as an investor it doesn't make sense to overpay.

If you spot any good prices on the 1oz bullion coin releases then feel free to drop them in the comments below. I expect Perth Mint will have some available through their bullion site and via phone orders later this morning, but may have some limits on the number investors can buy: Perth Mint Bullion.

Back To The Future Coins From The Perth Mint

Perth Mint are Releasing Back to the Future Coins
Perth Mint will be releasing several Back to the Future themed coins later this month. You may have already spotted them on the Perth Mint's Forthcoming Releases page:

Those familiar with the movies are likely aware that the release date is one highly anticipated by fans of the series. October 21, 2015 is the future (now present) day that Doc Brown and Marty visit in Back To The Future Part II to prevent Marty Jr. from going to jail.

Perth Mint has a page setup for the coin series, but not yet any pictures of the coins:
Three special commemorative coins have been released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future. The Perth Mint celebrates the anniversary with the release of pure silver and gold coins with spectacular shapes and special packaging on 21 October 2015.

Each coin is presented in sensational Back to the Future themed packaging, and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

Back to the Future is an American science fiction comedy film trilogy released in July 1985 and starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, a high school student who accidentally travels 30 years into the past to 1955, jeopardising his own future existence.

In the sequel Back To The Future II, Marty and Doc Brown have to travel to the future to stop Marty's future son from making a horrible mistake that would ruin the future family. They arrive on a Skyway on 21 October 2015.
The owner of Silver Stackers (& bullion dealer) 'gold pelican' had this to say about the coin release:
Demand has been shit hot for these. I think the launch will be in Sydney - details to follow when details are firmer.

Packaging is AWESOME.
I sometimes diverge from my usual lunar coin coverage to bring you a modern numismatic coin that may be worth considering to buy, I think this coin series will fit the bill (though expect as usual the Silver coins will outperform the Gold coin). I expect a swift sell out on Perth Mint's website once they go live in a couple of weeks. Good luck getting your hands on them if of interest. I will likely be along side you placing an order, though will depend on design, price and mintage numbers.

Back To The Future — DeLorean 2015 1oz Silver Proof Coin
The Back to the Future Coins from The Perth Mint will be released imminently. Once available you will find them to buy from the following pages:

Back To The Future — DeLorean 2015 1oz Silver Proof Coin

Back To The Future — Hoverboard 2015 2oz Silver Proof Coin

Back To The Future — DeLorean 2015 1/4oz Gold Proof Coin

As I highlighted in a recent article (Back To The Future Coins From The Perth Mint), The Perth Mint are releasing this new series of coins to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Back to the Future movie series and a hat tip to a date from the movie:
Those familiar with the movies are likely aware that the release date is one highly anticipated by fans of the series. October 21, 2015 is the future (now present) day that Doc Brown and Marty visit in Back To The Future Part II to prevent Marty Jr. from going to jail.
As shown on this screen grab:

I expected the coins might be a release with high interest and be worth buying:
I expect a swift sell out on Perth Mint's website once they go live in a couple of weeks. Good luck getting your hands on them if of interest. I will likely be along side you placing an order, though will depend on design, price and mintage numbers.
With most details now in hand I can confirm I will be looking to buy at least the two silver coins (still on the fence for the Gold coin, the low mintage is appealing, but historically there are very few high premium Gold coins from Perth Mint which have held their value over time). I'm particularly a fan of the hoverboard design which does actually hover with the assistance of some magnets and clever design (contender for most innovative coin packaging ever?). The packaging for the silver Delorean coin is also top notch. Without further ado, here is a quick guide to the new Back to the Future coins, including their description:

BACK TO THE FUTURE DELOREAN 30th Anniversary 1 Oz Silver Coin ($1 Tuvalu 2015)

Mintage 7500
BACK TO THE FUTURE DELOREAN 30th Anniversary 1 Oz Silver Coin 1$ Tuvalu 2015 - Thirty years after the box office success of Back to the Future, a new amazing coin issue in honor of the DeLorean. The coin is presented in a replica model car designed to look like a DeLorean DMC-12 sports car. The hood of the car pops up to reveal the coin, and the wheels rotate 90 degrees into flying mode". The car is packaged within an illustrated shipper and is accompanied by a numbered CoA. The reverse of this coloured coin features an image of the DeLorean DMC-12 sports car from Back to the Future surrounded by lightning bolts, with the Hill Valley Courthouse in the background. The inscription BACK TO THE FUTURE, and the coin's weight and fineness also appear in the design. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, and the 2015 year-date are shown on the coin's obverse.

BACK TO THE FUTURE HOVERBOARD 30th Anniversary 2 Oz Silver Coin ($2 Tuvalu 2015)

Mintage 2015

BACK TO THE FUTURE HOVERBOARD 30th Anniversary 2 Oz Silver Coin 2$ Tuvalu 2015 - Thirty years after the box office success of Back to the Future, a new amazing coin issue in honor of the Hoverboard. The coin is presented in a plastic capsule designed to look like McFly's hoverboard from Back to the Future II. The coin is suspended and hovering within the capsule using magnets attached to the capsule and inside a clear base. Packaged within an illustrated shipper and a CoA. The reverse of the coin features an image of Marty McFly's hoverboard as it appeared in Back to the Future II. The inscription HOVERBOARD also appears in the design. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, the coin's weight and fineness, and the 2015 year-date are shown on the coin's obverse.

BACK TO THE FUTURE DELOREAN 30th Anniversary Gold Coin ($25 Tuvalu 2015)

Mintage 1000

BACK TO THE FUTURE DELOREAN 30th Anniversary Gold Coin 25$ Tuvalu 2015 - Thirty years after the box office success of Back to the Future, a new amazing Gold coin issue in honor of the DeLorean. The coin is presented in a prestigious wooden case within an illustrated shipper and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Mintage 1.000 pieces worldwide. The reverse of the coin features the DeLorean DMC-12 sports car from Back to the Future set against a representation of a clock. The coin's weight and fineness also appear in the design. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, and the 2015 ear-date are shown on the coin's obverse.

If you're putting your hat into the ring for these coins, all the best with sourcing them. I expect the silver coins to be a quick sell out at The Perth Mint, especially so for the lower mintage hoverboard.
